3D Printable Art Info

3D printing is not a new technology, but it is a technology that has only recently become affordable to the average person. 3D printing has spent many years out of sight in the deep dark cave of industrial prototyping and academic research, entirely hidden from view and the exclusive property of large corporations and universities. In the many years in that corporate and academic cave, isolated from regular people like us that need to communicate to other regular people, a prodigious and intimidating jargon has developed that makes it very discouraging to try to learn about 3D technology and 3D files. The goal here is to explain 3D printing and 3D printable files in plain language so you can confidently explore the possibilities of this technology. We will avoid the needless jargon for the sake of having a practical understanding of what 3D files and printing are about. To the mechanical engineer it’s a “manual directional adjustment device”; to us it’s just a steering wheel. In what follows we’ll call the steering wheel a steering wheel.

Why should I care about 3D printing?

Before you can get excited about placing your first order for a 3D printable, custom file, you may be wondering why you should bother with 3D artwork and printing at all. There is no single answer to this question, and in a way the only convincing answer is one you will have to provide for yourself. The beauty of this technology is that the potential is virtually limitless and only you can make the possibilities a reality. In this realm of infinite possibility you are in the privileged position of acting in absolute freedom. What practical or artistic application are you going to come up with? Be creative, and find something that has meaning for yourself and others.

It is typical of new technologies throughout history that they are met with skepticism and often misunderstood in their significance by their contemporaries. The printing press was thought to be of only limited practical use; Edison thought the phonograph he invented was a serious development and wouldn’t be used for entertainment purposes; talkies were considered by many major movie directors to be an ephemeral fascination that would pass within a couple years.

Since we don’t want to make the mistake of dismissing a technology before exploring its potential we have a special section of our website dedicated specifically to discussing and sharing 3D printing ideas. Just click the button “3D Printing Ideas” from the home page, and browse some designs and creative ideas that we and others found especially inspiring.

What are the fundamentals of 3D printing I need to know?

There are really only a few things you need to know about the basics of 3D printing before you can get started on thinking up creative things to do and submitting the projects to get quoted on our website. You don’t need to be a 3D designer that has gone to school for two years to develop the highly technical skill of using 3D designing software. All you need to be able to do is effectively illustrate and communicate your ideas, we have a talented team of highly experienced designers who will take care of the rest.

Another point to consider is that you don’t need to own a 3D printer – although they are becoming increasingly affordable. Until recently, the cost of a 3D printer was prohibitively expensive because of the technology being used in the additive process. But advances have made this technology exponentially less expensive, so instead of having to spend around $25000, you now only have to drop around $600 to get started. That aside, there are lots of services out there that will print your 3D file for a small fee; and they will use industrial, rapid prototyping machines that are more capable than the personal printer.

There are a lot of options available with regard to the material when you go to get your 3D electronic file printed. They range from less expensive materials like plastic, nylon, and epoxy resins, to more expensive and durable materials like steel, titanium, and silver. The industrial machines will be capable of printing with all of these materials, but if you have a household 3D printer you will notice that a lot of them are limited to only printing with softer materials like plastic.

There are companies like RepRap.org and MakerBot.com that have made it possible for you to buy a 3D printer for your home. One important limitation to keep in mind if you are printing with one of the personal 3D printers is that they are limited with regard to the size of objects they can print. Most will only print a max dimension of 8” per side. However, newer models are coming out which allow for significantly larger dimensions, and you can always send a design to be printed by a company that uses the industrial machines.

Another limitation of the 3D printing process to keep in mind is that most printers are only capable of printing in 1-2 colors. Again, rapid advances are currently being made which will bring you 3D printers with multiple heads that can print in a larger variety of colors – this will be a major breakthrough for those of us who see amazing potential for artistic creation in this technology.

The personal 3D printers are also limited in their capacity to effectively render small or intricate detail. They don’t print in as high resolution as the industrial machines, so there are usually specifications like wall thickness that should be considered when having your design created by our artists. Wall thickness simply refers to the minimum width any given 3D printer can effectively create an object that is structurally stable and defined in appearance. There are a variety of software 3D design software packages available which vary greatly in their capacity and the extent to which they require expertise. A program like 3Ds Max by AutoDesk requires a high level of expertise and is used by architects and engineers. Blender is an awesome resource for 3D graphic design software because it is a free download and can be used for highly technical and complex designs. However the learning curve for blender is very steep and requires a lot of practice before it can be effectively used. There are great resources like Tinkercard and Google Sketchup which require minimal practice and are also free. The downside is that, despite being very user friendly, they are not very capable when it comes to 3D modeling and this imposes significant limits on creative potential.

Our goal here at Triaxisart.com is to make sure that you are able to become involved in this artistic 3D revolution without having to waste your valuable time mastering the technical aspects. We have a highly talented team of designers and IT geeks to take care of everything you need to make your inspired creation a reality. We know that you may have some questions to ask about 3D printing and 3D files, and we have an informed customer support department ready to help and eager to hear what you have to say.

3D Printing Ideas

ARTWORK:

Is there a particular design you think would look neat on your desk or on the coffee table but have never been able to find it in any store? 3D printing makes it possible for you to have that design immediately produced for a small fee. Simply send us the artwork the 3D design will be based off of and we will create the 3D model for you.

This is especially empowering because it allows you infinite levels of creativity and personalization when it comes to developing your sense of artistic expression. Stop trying to find what expresses your unique tastes among mass produced objects in stores and make it come to life as a 3D printable file that only you have.

We get a lot of highly specialized 3D artwork requests from customers, ranging from paper weights to gaming characters, and we are always able to meet their needs because our team of designers always includes someone that has the particular expertise the customer requires for a given project.

BRANDING & MARKETING:

If you own a business or work in marketing, it is essential that you start thinking about how the company logo and other graphic brand identifications can be interpreted as 3D designs. For the marketing department here at Triaxisart.com, this was actually a fun and productive exercise that was both challenging and rewarding. It’s challenging because you have to think about what the design is going to look like from all angles, and most all logos were not designed with this in mind. It’s also challenging because you have to think about the structural integrity of the design; you can’t just have objects hanging in the air without support.

For this reason, we believe most logos in the future will be designed in 3D first and then interpreted into 2D as needed, since this is much easier than interpreting from 2D to 3D. The challenge is highly rewarding because you get to experiment with a lot of different possibilities and the end result is something so much more dynamic and alive than the 2D logo you started with.

Marketing is difficult because you have to find ways to get your brand recognized over the loud commercial noise generated by countless companies all vying for customer attention. One of the more innovative and creative ways to break through the noise is to have 3D printed promotional objects that are highly customized. Most companies just get things like mugs, pens, and folders with their logo printed on it; but with the power of 3D design and printing, you can set your imagination free to create things that people will actually take a second look at.

You can’t go wrong with your very one-of-a-kind keychain design.

GIFTS:

One of life’s most persistent annoyances is trying to find meaningful and personalized gifts among the heaps of mass-produced consumer items in retail stores. Sure you can find stores that engrave personalized lettering, but it is still just engraved on a mass-produced object that doesn’t quite express what you are trying to convey. Here at Triaxisart.com, we specialize in helping people take their design concept and turn it into that perfect 3D printed gift that can’t be found anywhere else in the world!

You can tell this cup wasn’t designed by Martha Stewart.

USEFUL OBJECTS:

There is an endless amount of useful things you can use around the house or at work that you won’t find provided in the store. We have members of the 3D design team that specialize in high precision modeling who can take your idea and get it rendered as a 3D gadget.

Here is a cell phone holder for the car.

Did a button go missing on the grill and the manufacturer doesn’t provide a replacement part?

Here is a flashlight holder for a nerfball gun. Now you are the only one with the advantage in the dark.

JEWELRY:

The 3D design services we provide can also be used to have your jewelry concepts rendered in a 3D printable file. In fact, we even have 3D designers that specialize in creating jewelry because it is an artistic and technical talent that is difficult to find.

  • Do you provide 3D printing services?

No we do not provide the actual printing service. What we do is provide the non-expert in 3D technology with the tools they will need to take their inspiration and creative impulse and turn it into a 3D model reality. Once you have the digital 3D model, you can take it to the 3D printer of your choice. There are companies out there that specialize in printing 3D files in a wide variety of materials and textures for a reasonable price. The 3D printers are becoming so inexpensive now that you will most likely see them in the average home before too long.

  • What is the average cost to have a 3D model created for 3D printing?

The cost of a job varies greatly and it is nearly impossible to say that there is an ‘average’ job at all. However, if we were forced to spit out a figure the estimate would probably be between $20 and $70 for a typical 3D rendering. The price for a job is affected most significantly by the complexity of the model you are requesting. Costs are highly mitigated if you are able to provide detailed descriptions and supporting images that are in vector format.
